Cote d'Ivoire claiming part of Ghana's oil discoveries
(3/7/2010 - OGI: Laos) Cote d'Ivoire has allegedly laid claim to part of the Deepwater Tano Block in the Gulf of Guinea offshore Ghana where operator Tullow Oil has achieved numerous oil discoveries, including the giant Jubilee Field, which overlaps the Deepwater Tano and West Cape Three Points Blocks.
Ghana's minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Collins Dauda, said today that the border between Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire has not been formally delineated but that both countries have until now share and respected a median line that has been respected as the division between the two countries. He said that in recent communications with the government of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire has indicated it no longer accepts the median line as the boundary between the two countries and it has submitted its claim to extend its maritime boundary by 200 nautical miles to the United Nations. He added that the UN directed Cote d'Ivoire to negotiate a boundary with Ghana as a precondition for ruling on the 200 mile maritime boundary issue.

Collins Dauda said there could be serious repercussions if the question isn't handled with tact. In his option, however, he said the Cote d'Ivoire claim is baseless and not in accord with internationally accepted standards. Nevertheless, he said, Ghana is establishing a National Boundary Commission to negotiate with Cote d'Ivoire.
