Israel warned not to usurp Lebanese gas resources

(6/13/2010 - OGI: Cairo) The Lebanese ruling coalition party Hezbollah has warned Israel against development of the gasfields lying on the maritime boundary between it and Lebanon in the Mediterranean Sea.
Noble Energy made a significant gasfield discovery offshore Israel with its Tamar-1 exploration well in the Matan Block, which borders Lebanese aquatory, last year. Noble operates the block (Gal Block B) with 36% interest in partnership with a number of Israeli companies (Isramco Negev 2 28.75%, Delek Drilling 15.625%, Avner Oil Exploration 15.625%, and Dor Gas Exploration 4%.

Hashem Safieddine, Hezbollah's executive council chief, said Israel is set to lay claim to these natural gas fields and Hezbollah will not allow Israel to appropriate Lebanese gas resources. He made the remarks after Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri called for speedy action by the government to begin exploring its options in the newly discovered field off the northern port of Haifa.
"Israel is racing to make the case a fait accompli and was quick to present itself as an oil emirate, ignoring the fact that, according to the maps, the deposit extends into Lebanese waters," Berri said. "Lebanon must take immediate action to defend its financial, political, economic, and sovereign rights," he said.
