A Thousand Barrels a Second

(7/18/2007) A Thousand Barrels a Second: The Coming Oil Break Point and the Challenges Facing an Energy Dependent World, by Peter Terzakian, is an interesting read even though it was written primarily for investors and is another of the doomsaying books predicting the end of oil.
Terzakian says it's time to prepare for a major confrontation between the United States and China over oil that is sure to come and backs up his bleak leap onto the peak oil bandwagon with all sorts of charts and graphs. He puts together a pretty good case, using history and the machinations of corporate America, politicians, and supply chain economists to illustrate his prediction of oil's demise. But don't be put off by this negativism. It's a well crafted view - if one-sided - of energy future.
The author advises his readers (investors) to seize this opportunity to get out of petroleum and invest in alternative fuels from biofuels to nuclear energy and suggests that one consider companies involved in conservation, too. He says fossil fuels will be too expensive for small to medium size companies and energy inefficient industries and that many will succumb to the costs.
Tertzakian says the coming "break point" is actually the next five to ten years, and it is within that period that oil prices will rise and force shifts to alternative fuels. The opportunity and the challenges are upon us, he says, presenting no solutions but offering that wise investors will do well to shift their portfolios as well.
